"Whoever gives even a bale of hay to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple--truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward."  Mt. 10:42(Slightly edited...)

    Lutherans Organize Operation Haylift
Iowa hay to be shipped to Texas farms

STORM LAKE, IOWA - 9/8/11 - Lutheran Disaster Response is having a hay drive. They are asking farmers to donate a bales of hay which will be sent to Texas. In Texas the hay will go to small farmers who, because of the worst drought in history, are being forced to sell their herds. While there is no hay in Texas, Iowa has had one of its best years for hay. Lutherans are hoping that Iowa farmers will share.Loading hay for Texas.Operation haylift has its beginnings in northeastern part of the state. Pr. Mark Anderson, Assistant to the Bishop in the Northeastern Iowa Synod ELCA, reported that "a FOURTH truck load of hay left Luana for Texas as a part of the Synod's 'Hay Lift.' We are still in need of trucks with drivers to deliver more. The weight restrictions have been lifted and the permit fees have been waived for trucks that are a part of this effort. We pay for fuel and reasonable expenses if someone can donate their time and truck. We are also happy to receive financial gifts and gifts of hay."
In the western third of the state, the Western Iowa Synod, ELCA is soliciting hay bales for Texas. Drop-off points have been set up in Le Mars, Dunlap, Shenandoah and in the Humboldt area. In each of these areas farmers have volunteered places for hay to be stored until it is shipped as well as equipment and the manpower and equipment to handle the bales.

The Northern Texas - Northern Louisiana Synod, ELCA is receiving the hay and distributing to small farmers at risk of loosing their cattle and farm. Randy Sherman a volunteer hay hauler had this to say about his trip to Texas. "Driving up here, everything's pretty and green, Driving down there, everything is brown and dead, pretty much a dust bowl. It's very dry down there. The ponds are drying up, and there's just no water, no feed, no hay."

The ongoing drought in the southern plains is leaving all sorts of commodities in short supply.

The price of hay delivered to farmers has more than doubled since July of 2010. It has some farmers deciding between buying the hay, selling off cattle or moving them to rented, greener pastures.

To donate hay, contact the nearest site. Local ELCA Lutheran churches have agreed to help coordinate the effort. Call to let them know that you have hay to donate.
